Intelligent import of Word documents and Ebooks

The Bookalope extension enables InDesign to read Word (and similar) & ebook files, and receive a semantically structured and cleaned up InDesign document in IDML format.

The Bookalope extension enables InDesign to read Word (and similar) & ebook files, and receive a semantically structured and cleaned up InDesign document in IDML format.

Bookalope is a set of intelligent tools that ingest documents in Word or similar formats, including (broken, invalid) ebooks, then analyze their semantic structure and clean up the document, and convert them into various file formats.

The Bookalope extension enables seamless access to these tools from InDesign. To use the extension, however, an account with Bookalope and an access token are required: https://bookalope.net/

After selecting a document and filling in some optional metadata, the extension uploads the document to the server and waits. Upon finishing the document analysis and conversion, Bookalope returns an InDesign file in IDML format with a semantically structured and clean document, as well as a valid mapping of paragraph classes and inlined text to HTML tags.

The extension loads that converted document into a new InDesign document . If the structure was not identified precisely, then adjustments can be made through the Bookalope website and the extension refreshes the local InDesign document using these server-side adjustments.

Furthermore, other file formats can be downloaded directly through the extension, including accessible EPUB or print-ready PDF.
